
How to Prepare
​Preparing for your EMG/NCS is simple,
just follow the steps listed below:

If possible, shower the day of your exam

Clean skin is best​
-

No lotions, creams, oils or powders on your arms, legs, hands or feet
-
Wear loose clothing
-
Shorts and short-sleeved shirts are best​
-
-
Eat and hydrate normally
-
Take your usual medications unless instructed otherwise
-
Try to keep your hands and feet warm
-
Cold limbs can affect nerve testing​
-

Don't forget to fill out your INTAKE FORMS in advance
-
If you're unable to fill them out in advance, please arrive 15mins before your appointment​​

Your appointment will consist of an EMG, NCS and the Ultrasound.
​
Electromyography (EMG)​
-
A very small needle is placed in certain muscles to measure muscle activity.
The needle is used only to record muscle signals and does not deliver electrical shocks.
Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)
-
Small electrodes are placed on the skin. Brief electrical pulses test how well the nerves work. You may feel a quick tingling sensation.
Neuromuscular Ultrasound
-
If needed, ultrasound may be used to examine nerves and surrounding tissues.

​​​Test Time

One extremity: about 30 minutes
-
Two extremities: about 45 minutes
Discomfort

-
Most patients report mild temporary discomfort.​
After the Test

-
You may drive, work, and return to normal activities immediately.
Results

-
Your referring provider usually receives the report within two business days.
